BJS 2013 Report Understates Reductions In Fire Arms Related Homicides

According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS), United States Department of Justice, the number of homicides by Firearm deaths declined by 39% between 1993 and 2011. The report is interesting, because reports during the George Bush administration typically included data from the 1970s rather than starting with the 1990s during the era of the assault weapons ban.

Some might argue that the decline in firearms related homicides had to do with the assault weapons ban in the 1990s. The longer term data shows that firearms related homicides peaked in the 1970s during the period of stagflation in the United States. In 1976, the number of firearm related homicides was 20,710 compared to 11,101 in 2011. That is nearly a 50% reduction in firearm related homicides. Thus, the recent report by the BJS actually understates the decline in firearms related homicides because it excludes data from the 1970s.

Still, even when the administration attempts to skew the data, the evidence doesn’t support their efforts to ban certain types of “stylized” weapons.

Homicides, while tragic, do not make up the bulk of the firearm related crime. According to the report, homicides made up about 2% of all firearm-related crimes.

The report also finds that about 70% to 80% of firearm homicides and 90% of nonfatal firearm victimizations were committed with a handgun from 1993 to 2011. Thus, assault rifle and “stylized” assault weapons ban really had little impact on fire arms homicides.

From 1993 to 2010, males, blacks, and persons ages 18 to 24 had the highest rates of firearm homicide. The BJS 2013 report showed that “among state prison inmates who possessed a gun at the time of [their] offense, less than 2 percent bought their gun at a flea market or gun show.” The report stated that 40% obtained their firearm from an illegal source. This suggests that efforts at closing “gun show” loopholes would be ineffective to preventing firearm related homicides.
