Dress to Dominate: Laurentiu Dobre's Hard Core Storms New York Fashion Week
September 16, 2026 · John Enot
Inside the Angel Orensanz Foundation Center — a 19th-century former synagogue on Manhattan's Lower East Side, now one of New York's most striking event spaces — Laurentiu Dobre sent his latest Hard Core Fashion collection down the runway as part of New York Fashion Week 2026, presented by Art Hearts Fashion. AVANTI MODA TV was there to capture every look.
Dobre has spent a decade building Hard Core Fashion around a single governing idea: asymmetry as architecture. "Every closure, collar and hem is displaced on purpose," the brand's own philosophy states. "The garment is drawn like architecture, not like a template." Premium fabric is paired with industrial hardware — zips, plates, and clasps treated as deliberate design elements rather than functional afterthoughts, giving every piece a hard, structural edge that has become the label's signature.
That edge is right there in the brand's motto: Dress to Dominate. It's not a soft sell, and Dobre doesn't intend it to be. Hard Core's own tagline, "Not for everyone," carries through to how the clothes are actually made — pieces are cut in small runs, some as single units, and once a run closes, it isn't reissued. It's a luxury model built on scarcity rather than volume, and it's core to how the brand positions itself against mass-market fashion.

Dobre's own path to the runway started far from New York. Born in Focșani, Romania, he moved to Bucharest at 18 to study Fine Arts before training at the Fashion Institute of Technology, including a year devoted specifically to sewing and pattern-making. His origin story as a designer is almost accidental: he made himself a pair of pants with a loose, unconventional waistband that others found extravagant at the time — and the reaction to that one piece became the spark for what would become Hard Core Fashion. He built the label from the ground up, working as a courier and handling his own accounting and sketches simultaneously in its earliest days.
He's also spoken about where the designs themselves come from. "I am passionate about history, and all my clothes have historical themes," Dobre has said — Ancient Egypt, Ancient Rome, and China among his recurring references — alongside inspiration he pulls directly from his own travels.
Hard Core Fashion launched in November 2014, initially as a menswear label before evolving into the gender-fluid, unisex silhouette the brand is known for today — deliberately blending masculine and feminine characteristics into a single, ambiguous form. From that start in Bucharest, Dobre has expanded the brand's presence across Paris, Tokyo, London, and Miami, with New York now serving as a home base. Along the way, his designs have found their way onto artists including J Balvin, and the brand says its pieces have been worn at events including the Billboard Music Awards and past New York Fashion Week seasons.
This latest show continues that trajectory. Presented under Art Hearts Fashion's NYFW banner, the collection carried Hard Core's dark, architectural point of view through an entire runway of asymmetric cuts and metal-fused fabric — the same "built like architecture" philosophy the brand has been refining since 2014, now on one of fashion week's stages. For a designer who started with a single pair of pants that didn't look like anything else in the room, it's the latest step in a decade-long argument that fashion doesn't have to be for everyone to matter.
