"There's always an adaptation happening."

The scale of their collaborative operation is substantial. On an annual basis, Summers and Parton's costume team produce approximately 300 entirely custom pieces for the performer. "Every single day involves work on an outfit in various stages of production," Summers notes. "When Dolly has scheduled appearances, crafting 10 different outfits in a single day is completely routine."

Over their extended partnership, Summers and his team developed deep expertise in predicting which silhouettes and styles would complement Parton's preferences and appearance. The disposition of Parton's extensive collection of stage costumes and footwear presents an interesting question. According to Summers, the entire archive gets preserved in dedicated warehouse storage. Each garment Parton has ever performed in has been meticulously photographed and catalogued, including detailed documentation of the specific event where it appeared and the designer who created it. "The system is fully digital, organized by color palette, clothing category, and design style," Summers explains. "We maintain the majority of Dolly's wardrobe dating back to 1964."
