Beyoncé Pledges $1 Million to Aid Colombia Earthquake Recovery

Beyoncé has committed to a personal contribution of $1 million aimed at supporting recovery and relief initiatives in Colombia following a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck the Chocó region during the early part of August.

According to a statement issued by Parkwood Entertainment, the funds are designated specifically for delivering food supplies and housing assistance to communities most severely impacted by the seismic event. The announcement also directed interested parties to explore additional support opportunities through organizations including Food for the Poor and World Central Kitchen.

According to reporting from The Associated Press citing government data, the August 10 earthquake claimed at least 312 lives and resulted in the destruction of approximately 29,000 residential structures. The UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported that approximately 10 percent of Chocó's residents—roughly 69,000 individuals—experienced direct impacts from the earthquake or were forced to leave their homes.

In a parallel gesture of support, fellow artist Shakira announced her own contribution of $1.25 million toward educational reconstruction initiatives just days earlier. Her pledge, channeled through a coalition of collaborating organizations, encompasses $500,000 from Shakira and Live Nation combined, $500,000 sourced from the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, and $250,000 from CAF, Latin America and the Caribbean's development banking institution. These resources will be administered via Shakira's Fundación Pies Descalzos, also known as the Barefoot Foundation, with the stated objective of reconstructing damaged educational facilities and enabling students to resume their studies.

Reflecting on her motivation for the educational focus, Shakira expressed to journalists her primary concern regarding the region's recovery trajectory. She stated that her foremost worry centers on ensuring schools are properly reconstructed once the immediate crisis concludes, emphasizing that every day students remain out of school represents a lost opportunity in their educational development.

Shakira further shared her emotional connection to the affected region, describing it as a place she cherishes deeply and where she has witnessed her students flourish within her educational programs. She expressed her strong desire to see the region and its institutions restored to their former condition. AM
