Meet the Experts:
- Dr. Alexandra Bowles, D.O., is a board-certified dermatologist at MONA Dermatology in Cincinnati.
- Dr. Jonathan Leary is the Founder and CEO of Remedy Place, with locations in New York and Los Angeles.
What Are the Benefits of Red Light Therapy?
Jonathan Leary, founder and CEO of Remedy Place, points to several reasons for considering red light therapy. One is that the treatment works well for increasing collagen production and overall energy. "It's become a beauty trend due to its ability to reduce fine lines and wrinkles," Leary explains. "Red light therapy stimulates the mitochondria, the 'powerhouse' of cells, to increase energy production."
It can also improve microcirculation, which means more oxygen reaches the body. "This boosts recovery, healing, and overall cellular health," he adds. Because of this boost to recovery, red light therapy is also popular for muscle recovery and is increasingly used as a treatment for hair growth. "Red light therapy can stimulate hair follicles and promote hair growth, making it a valuable tool for those experiencing hair thinning or loss," notes the expert.

How Often Should I Use Red Light Therapy?
As with most beauty and wellness habits, consistency matters most. “Red light therapy is typically recommended several times a week for optimal results, with sessions lasting about 20 minutes,” Leary explains, noting that daily use poses no problem at all. Bon Charge CEO Andy Mant shares this view, having told Bazaar in the past: “To see results, give it time—most people may notice benefits like better skin tone, improved sleep, and relaxation within four to 12 weeks.”
Are There Any Risk When Using Red Light Therapy?
"FDA-cleared red light therapy devices are safe for most people when used correctly, with only minor potential side effects," says Leary. A mild skin reaction is one possible side effect. "Some users may experience temporary redness, irritation, or discomfort at the treatment site,” says Leary, adding that it usually resolves quickly.
Bowles also points out that the light can be intense. “It’s also important to protect your eyes, especially if you’re using a stronger professional device or a mask that sits close to the face,” says the professional. According to Leary, people dealing with conditions like lupus or other autoimmune disorders, as well as anyone on medication that raises sensitivity to light, ought to check with their doctor before beginning red light therapy. “While no known risks have been conclusively linked to red light therapy during pregnancy, it’s also best to consult your doctor before use,” he advises.
